Basic Challenge/Contest Information
Banner Contest: Entrants submit a banner based around the contest's theme. Banner sizes are outlined in the rules (banners are usually no larger than 700x250 pixels). Banners may included blended/collage elements. The contest host does not supply images to be used in the banners, the entrants find their own.
Blend Challenges: Challenge host supplies stock photos and entrants create a blend/collage using at least two of them. Each challenge has a theme, so stock photos are usually all of the same person, or all from the same photoshoot etc.
Colorization Challenge: Also known as Add Color Challenge. Host supplies black and white (or grayscale) photos for entrants to colorize. Entrants choose one of the photos (photos cannot be blended together or made into a collage). Brushes, effects, and textures etc. can be used to enhance the image.
Graphic Contest: Entrants make a blend/collage/graphic based on the contest's theme. Entrants find their own images; the host does not supply them. Contest rules usually specify a minimum/maximum size for the graphics (graphics are usually never smaller than 800x600 pixels).
Icon Challenge: Also known as Avatar Challenge. Host supplies photos to be used by contestants. Rules of the challenge will specify the size the icon must be (usually 100x100 pixels), and whether or not more than one of the photos supplied can be used in the icon (this is usually ok). Textures, text, etc. may be added to the icon to enhance it.
Challenge vs. Contest: In a contest the entrants find images to use on their own based on the contest's theme. This can be a problem because in lots of contests whoever finds the cutest or coolest image to use in their entry usually wins or tends to place higher than people who submit more complex/creative entries. In a contest finding an awesome image to use in the entry is the most important thing, and the creativity/skill that goes into making the entry isn't as appreciated. Contests are the easiest to host, because you just pick a theme, set a deadline, pick the winners, and make a banner for them. In a challenge images are supplied by the host, so everyone starts off in a more standardized way. Entries that win challenges are usually chosen more on talent/creativity than appearance, because the host has a better idea about how much went into making the entry, and creativity can be judged against how all the other entries encorporated the images. People who have entered or hosted challenges tend to host contests/enter contests with the challenge mindset.
